On Sunday, February 8th, at approximately 0945 hours, Ulster Hose was dispatched for a stove fire with the activation of the fire alarm system at Ulster Gardens Apartments. While responding, Cars 1 and 2 were advised of a call from the location stating the alarm system could be heard in the building, and the smoke was the building as well. Residents began evacuating.
On arrival, Car 2 had nothing showing from the outside. Upon entry, he reported a working fire in the apartment, with the stove, cabinets and other debris burning, and smoke emanating from the windows and eves of the building.
Car 1 requested a working fire dispatch. Engine 4 quickly arrived, stretched a handline to the fire and secured a water source. Truck 1 arrived and laddered the building with both ground ladders and the ariel; crews assisted with searches, evacuation and ventilation. Engine 2 and Engine 3 crews assisted with floor above and attic operations. Rescue 3 was on scene for rehab.
UHFD helped numerous residents out of the building, and Empress treated and released two patients.
Mutual aid at the scene included Glasco Fire Department with their FASTeam, Hurley Fire Department with a tanker, the Ulster Police Department, Central Hudson, the Town of Ulster Building Inspector, and Empress Ambulance. Standby was provided by Centerville-Cedar Grove Fire Department.
